*headdesk*
Excuse me for a sec. I’m still wiping Ms Pershing’s spittle off my shoes.
You know what? I’m staying in RWA. If only to piss her off. It’s actually worth $85 a year to me to stand up at the AGM (whenever I get to conference again) and say, “I’m still here. And I’m going to stand here, right in your face, until you can’t ignore me anymore.”
Who knows what Michelle Monkou thinks of e-pub? Seriously. I need to know this stuff. If she’s going to be the person at the top of the froot-loop chain at RWA, I want to know if she’s going to take the same “screw you and the publisher you rode in on” tone as Ms Pershing just did.
Because honestly, if you can’t read the disdain dripping from every keystroke of that blog post, then we’re not reading the same thing. Those pot-shots she took at Deirdre were deeply unprofessional.
Disgusting, on a personal level. I might have had some respect for her as a person, no matter what her opinion of e-publishing was, or how she ran RWA, but after that? Nuh-uh. That was appalling behaviour and frankly, intolerable in a leader.
As for this little gem: “As for members leaving and/or threatening to leave, I have been in RWA for 19 years and on the board for five. Each year members threaten to leave because they are displeased with something. Some do; most don’t. No organization can make everyone happy, but RWA goes on, no matter what.”
I don’t think you can interpret that in any other way but “Glad you like your chapter. Now give us your money.” I’m going to start writing things on the checks I write to National. Stuff like, “My e-published royalties paid for this. When do I get to play with the big kids?”
And all this discussion of advances and royalties and disenfranchisement still hasn’t answered a basic question.
Am I published or not?
Cuz dang. I feel published.
I gotta write a story now. Sure wish I had a career in this writing thing.

Breathe, woman, breathe.
I read somewhere that Angela James is going to post on Monday over at ESPAN (which I could find the reference)
Now, keep on breathing…
(((Sela)))
Here’s the clearest distinction, and it was listed in the comments even…
The IRS wants to know how much you made and wants taxes paid on it.
You’re published. Whether RWA recognizes that or not is not on you, but them. Good luck at the AGM.
Alas, I can’t attend this year, but I do intend to stand up at next year’s AGM. And the one after that. And the one after that. And every AGM I can physically attend.
Cuz I’m pigheaded that way.
Late last night I wrote a letter that I’m going to send to each board member, but I haven’t sent it yet. I wrote it at 1 am and I’m not sure if it’s a real letter or just ranting.
