Heads up, y’all

Diane Pershing, president of RWA, is set to respond to Deirdre Knight’s most excellent blog post on Friday. Not sure of the venue and I’ll be traveling that day so I won’t be here to update.

I suggest checking in with Kristen Painter for appropriate linkage on the day.

EDIT: Kristen says that Pershing’s response will be on the ESPAN blog — same place that Deirdre posted.

Pershing’s response will be posted on the ESPAN blog. That’s the venue.

Call me catty and cynical, but I’m dreading this response. (My mind eye is envisioning a Jerry Springer-worthy spewing.)

To be honest, I’m as pessimistic as you are, aztec. I predict that she’s going to try to justify herself with a lot more vague language about “decent living” and those of us who have made uninformed decisions, rather than make any moves where RWA might actually have to deal with e-publishing as a legitimate venue.

I also predict that she’s going to say she welcomes information about e-publishing — but then never do anything about it.

    I wish I believed differently.

But the bonus is that the next election is in October!

  • azteclady says:

Regarding uninformed decisions: well, fewer RWA members would make them if RWA provided accurate, up-to-date, unbiased information about ALL aspects of publishing during their conferences, wouldn’t you say?

So okay, they wouldn’t take Angela James up about her workshop. Then, why not put out a call for RWA members in good standing to speak about their experiences with e publishing?

Like oh, I don’t know… Deirdre Knight. Lauren Dane. Jaci Burton. Maya Banks.

and many more whose names I don’t know.

Here’s the kicker: *I* read very few ebooks (no e-reader, computer screen kills the eyes, DRM, techno-imbecile, etc.) but even so I have seen the explosion of e publishers–successful, honest, fraudulent, struggling, sinking, and any other kind you want to name.

It’s beyond inconceivable that people IN THE INDUSTRY haven’t seen it even more clearly than those of us in the outside.

So the conclusion is: willful blindness, the most difficult condition to correct on any human being.

All I can do is nod furiously in agreement. Head in the sand, ass waving around in the air is not a good look on anyone.

Sometimes I just hate being right.
